Untold Stories: Community Drama Workshops at Heart of Hawick

An empty stage. A bench. Two actors. What happens next?

Join us to create more Untold Stories: Tales from the town and be part of a brand-new ensemble theatre piece made from scratch. Starting with a blank stage and no script, you'll work alongside others to develop characters, stories, scenes and performance through a fun, supportive devising process.

This project is open to adults aged 18+ and will explore the heritage, stories and identity of our region. The stories will be based on a fictional bench somewhere in the town of Hawick. Together we will ask the questions who has sat here before us? Who has walked these paths, crossed these bridges and looked out across the River Teviot? We'll create a time-shifting ensemble piece of theatre that journeys between past, present and future.

You'll create, devise dialogue and “write” a new piece of theatre as part of a collaborative ensemble process. Guided by experienced theatre-maker Ellie Zeegen you'll explore acting, voice, movement, improvisation and learn all about how devising can be part of the writing process - while learning practical tools used by professional performers. Develop confidence, strengthen your voice, improve projection and discover the actor's toolkit. No experience is required—just curiosity, imagination and a willingness to step onto the stage and create something - together.

Ideal for those curious about acting and writing. All participants are asked to be willing to be on stage as performers - those with writing ambitions too! For as Orson Welles once said: "All great writers are actors, even merely competent ones are. They have the actor's capacity for getting inside the skin of a character."
