‘Vibe in the Borders’ @ the Great Tapestry of Scotland.

Free Music Workshop delivered by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra

The aim of this project is to bring high-quality, inspiring music-making opportunities directly to young people in the Scottish Borders.

Working in partnership with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, GToS will deliver creative, inclusive workshops that introduce young people to improvisation, musical exploration, and creative thinking. These workshops use Scottish cultural heritage—specifically selected panels from The Great Tapestry of Scotland, as the artistic spark for hands-on music creation.

The project supports SCO’s commitment to widening access to the arts, nurturing creativity in young people, and strengthening cultural engagement within local schools and communities.

Two standalone 90-minute sessions for young people aged 11–18. Participants may attend one or both sessions depending on interest.

Activities:

  • Exploring themes such as Pop Music and cultural change in Scotland
  • Using the Tapestry imagery as creative stimulus
  • List of tapestry panels with musical content supplied
  • Collaborative improvisation sessions
  • Trying new instruments and experimenting with musical ideas
  • Group creation of a short piece or soundscape by the end of each session

These open workshops provide access for young musicians and non-musicians alike, supporting creativity, community building, and informal music engagement.
